Atonement was once gained by the sacrifice of a prized animal. It showed that the guilt and the sinful deed had been dealt with. However, the continued slaughter of valuable animals would not change the heart of the people.
Because humans have a need to be made right, a feeling of unworthiness or wrongness, we need to be declared right. In legal terms this is referred to as being acquitted. It is due to the blood of Christ that humans can be justified and be made right.
