Misunderstanding the Trinity can lead to great confusion. The heresies that plagued the early church were primarily the result of overemphasizing either God's "oneness" or his "threeness." The doctrine of the Trinity, then, allows us to confess our belief in one true God and also that Jesus Christ, his Son, is God—which is the heart of the gospel. Additionally, the doctrine of the Trinity informs how we should live as individuals and minister as the church. Because we are created in God's image, we must reject our culture's message of self-reliance and live in loving community with one another. As the body of Christ on earth, the church is bound up in eternal community with the Triune God, which means that our ministry is a reflection of the nature of God.
